For the longest time I had a tape deck in my vehicle. That's right. No jokes here. ...AND my stereo system still has a tape deck. No shame required here ...whatsoever. ;-) lol

Nothing better than kickin' it old school with the top down, listening to Milli Vanilli, Roxette and pretty much anything labelled with "The Best of...." We all grew up with tapes... maybe some of you grew up with records. Heck I still collect those too. ;-) ....But tapes were epic. Blank tapes gave you a reason to stay up friday night ready to press record in hopes of capturing the top 10. Those were the days.

Oh how times have changed...but now and again, I (literally) blow the dust off and rewind the hits.

I love pressing play.

I think this applies to life in general.

If something isn't right with whatever... blow it out of the water and re-light the situation. After all, a candle can keep burning with the proper care & attention. Handle with care. :-)

The underrated carnation needs more recognition. I think carnations should be the new found flower of 2012. Imagine your wedding bouquet jam packed with carnations and nothing else. Gorgeous.
Carnations are durable as nails... and pretty as waterfalls.

What I found interesting is the fact that scientifically they are known as the "flower of love" or the "flower of the gods", depending on the source. Cool. I'll take 1500 of them any day. ;-)

So when you're kids ask you if you learned anything today, you can tell them this:
Light red carnations are often used to convey admiration, whereas the dark red versions express deeper sentiments of love and affection. White carnations are associated with purity and luck... and pink carnations are often given as a sign of gratitude. In the early part of the 20th century, carnations became the official flower of Mother's Day. Which brings me to my next photo idea. ;-)

This up coming Mother's Day (which is also my birthday) wink wink, nudge nudge... I'll be hosting a carnation tea & picture taking. No worries, I'll remind you closer to the date when you can start booking in. ;-) This is just a hint to spark some interest in your ears.

I think my sisters should just keep having babies. I almost can't handle the cuteness!

She did so well for being sick with a nasty cold. If I could make one rule with kids... is that they don't have to get any kind of sickness whatsoever.

Maintaining a balance with life in general, can be a challenge. Life is about challenges (good or bad), I think. Whether its with weight, work, family, keeping your fridge tidy, ...literally... anything. ;-)

I've hit my goal a few times with weight watchers. Even when I get off track, I come back. ... and I always receive the key and motivation I need. The secret to anything is staying faithful and committed. :-)

I remember the first time I carefully held a negative with my cotton covered fingers. It forever made me inspired to capture things on film as much as I could. I love the digital days...but there is something more permanent about shooting film.

I shot these images before Christmas and I have yet to bring them to life in the darkroom...but they still look pretty cool against a window.

Palm Springs

It wasn't long ago we hit the open road to Palm Springs, along the way experiencing scenery at its finest. We witnessed powerful winds, freezing snow, blowing snow...and breaking into new territory we experienced the warm air we missed so much. That same journey will happen in a short while. I can only hope we have less of a snow storm to travel through...or maybe a plane will get us there this time. The plan is yet to be determined.... but I'm very excited for the inspiration that California will bring in March.

When its times like these and the air is so cold outside... all you want to do is stay inside and make a gorgeous bowl of coconut kung-pao soup....loaded with veggies, rice noodles and chilli's. Had to bring out the corelle dishes for this shot. ;-)

And by the way... a very great & loyal fan made it very clear that I pretty much cheated on my last 365 post. This might be true. Yes, I may have skimmed by just taking a quick photo of something I had been staring at all day (aka the computer screen)... and yes anyone can take a picture of something. However, this really isn't what the 365 project is about. I want to take great shots... not just ANY shots. I realize there will be days that don't permit it... after all, sometimes "time" is a factor.

Yesterday was a reminder why not to forget the reasons for doing this as an artist. :-)

Becoming a professional photographer is a dream for anyone who is passionate about capturing life through their lens. Once photographers reach that point, they are filled with enthusiasm and desire to create the best images they possibly can. I strive for this everyday.

If you truly love photography, that never goes away. But soon the pressure of running a business, meeting deadlines and creating a consistent product can take the joy out of picking up your camera “just because” – even just a little. I'm still pretty good with taking a camera where ever I go. I have the heavy purse to prove it. ;-)

I came across a very cool idea from The CWP Network. "Canadian Women Photographers Network"...What they highly suggested was starting a 365 day challenge. These have been popping up on Facebook and on blogs for a while now, and many people choose to face the challenge in different ways. I've seen some stay committed...some miss days here and there... some finish!

But lets face it... its a big commitment.

Basically this is how the challenge works: (Its pretty simple.. but I'm guna get jiggy with it)

Take a picture, every single day. I know this sounds obvious, but many people I have seen doing a 365 challenge are just posting a photo a day. In my opinion, that’s cheating. It doesn’t take much work or imagination to upload an image. So my vow to myself... is to take at least ONE photo a day and post it. Just one... not 5... just one shot for you. I'll be taking a photo with the following guidelines in mind.

Take a photo that makes you uncomfortable.
Take a photo that inspires you.
Take a photo that sums up your day.
Take a photo that describes you without you being in it.
Take a photo of something that moves you, in a way that moves you.

To me... its not hard. Its a little scary making such a commitment...but really... not hard. Its called a challenge for a reason... and I'm up for any challenge that puts a little snap in my click.

Have no fear Friday the 13th. This challenge starts today. :-0

Nerd Alert

I always wanted to wear glasses as a kid. Looking up in silly jealousy at my sisters who HAD to wear glasses growing up... and then there was little old perfect 20/20 visioned me. lol

Little did I know what was in store for me in my 30's. I got my wish. ;-)... Sorta.

Reality is... I've had my face stuck at a computer since switching to digital. .... So it could be for that reason I need glasses... it could be age... it could be because you have to be careful what you wish for!

Dreams might take awhile... but in some shape or form, they might come true. :-)

Goodbye Decorations

This post as been a long time coming. A year in fact! ;-)

When a year ends... I always think about the next one and the next one. I can't help but wonder what challenges I might face or what tasks I'll conquer. (Even if it is putting up new wallpaper or painting a wall... or getting rid of a dated big screen TV.... LORD please take that TV off my hands lol) I totally dislike big TV's.... especially from 1990. ;-)

Moving along....

Seems like a whole year goes by and you wonder what happened to it... but I can only look forward, upward... yonder. My blog is a reminder to myself of what a great year I had meeting new faces and seeing old...(but not really old) faces. lol

When I think about what I want to accomplish in the year ahead (because lets face it... New Years is all about NeW YEaRs REsoLuTions)... I think about my business mostly. Because its just me in the starring role of this show, I need to think about things that need improvement, things that need organizing and mostly how do I keep moving forward (and moving up). In a city full of bright talent, finding your spot is a never ending task.... so I hope to continue providing the best photography I possibly can for my dedicated clients & friends... and yes, for my family. ;-)

In the future, I will proclaim to be careful of what you wish for. (enter shark music here) lol.... In some way, shape or form, it jusssssst might come true. lol And yes, I've always wished for great things and I've received great experiences. Experience is how you grow as an artist. I'm always searching in my mind of what I can do next and I still hope to document life as much as I can, after all.... life as a photographer is very interesting. lol I like to think so anyways. ;-)

...And with every post comes the photos and what better way to show some recent poppy seed rolls and fresh buns I made. Life is better with bread....but seriously, I gotta stop trying to be the next great baker and focus on the big picture. ;-)

Since I mainly shoot people (and I love photographing faces)... one of my other favorite things to shoot is products. Anything pretty much standing still... ;-)

My wonderful man ventured into honey this year. The finished product turned out organically perfect.

We love honey... but we love Nubee Honey.

Sunday Baking Day

Its tradition. When you're a kid... you get to lick the spoon afterwards. Its how we roll.

I'm not one to say... "hey, let's follow a recipe"... because I love to make it my own. So when I make traditional butter tarts... there is nothing traditional about them. They have no raisins.... they have coconut instead....and they are called "Budda Tarts" from now on.

The kitchen aid...was a blessing in disguise. She burned a few calories....while I consumed a few calories doing some sampling. ... (but hey, I still hope to lose weight on the weight watcher scale this week)

Pal (The Horse)

Sometimes... not always do I get to photograph those sleeping babies. Usually they are wide awake! Must be something in the air at my studio.... but this baby doll, gave me a few options to work with. Seriously, such a sweet baby. (The parents are pretty cool too.... ;-)

....Because I love photography, I find myself shooting even when I don't need to be shooting... or even when Im not being paid to shoot. I think that's what sets me a part from all the other photographers out there. I'm truly inspired by all the things in my life, your life, all the things around me, all the things I get to see..... so I want to document it as much as I humanly can. (Although my shoulders are wearing thin from carrying a heavy camera around... Time for a smaller Nikon I think...lol)

Even if I didn't have a fancy camera... I would still find a way to take pictures. With technology these days... anything is possible.

:-) So know this:
I don't take pictures because I have to. I take pictures because I need to. (I want to). If I had all the money in the world... I would still take pictures. It was something I was born to do and I plan to do it for as long as I can. This is why Im so thankful for all my dedicated clients, friends and family. You're part of the reason I can keep doing what Im doing as a living. So this goes out to all my peeps who support me... or who plan to support me in the future. You rock the house baby. Simply put.... So thank you. ;-)

I'll say it once and I'll say it again. Online shopping really is a gift in itself.

You can add stuff to your "cart".... and think about it. More times than none, I forget whats in the cart... hence not buying it. Saves me big time.

Then again, if there is something I truly like... and maybe need, I don't hesitate to click that purchase button. The fact that it comes right to your door wrapped up like a little gift from heaven... is just... well, its da'bomb.

Last week I got to celebrate my good friend Jeanie's Birthday.

Sushi was the style that night.... and now I think making it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. (Although, I curse bread products right now....)

Still... a little tiny gathering between a few amazing entrepreneur friends makin' sushi and celebrating life. It was perfect.

Braces Are Beautiful

Not so long ago.... okay-okay... maybe like 18 years ago, I was magically awarded to wear braces. It was one of those moments in life, you knew things were going to change. You no longer got to eat toffee or consume large amounts of popcorn. The phrase "brace face" was your new nickname and by no means necessary were you to kiss another boy with braces. (This wasn't an issue at 13, trust me) lol

But what I meant before was..... change for the better. I knew as soon as I got that metal in my mouth, after 2 years I would be finished with the awkwardness and blossom.

My little Hannah got her braces the other day. She is growing up. I can't wait to see her progress and witness all the changes. If she's anything like her Auntie, she is going to LOVE the results of getting braces.

Counting By Two

It's used daily as a method of counting. Counting by two. Pretty simple when you think about it.

...And I was taught by my amazing Auntie Chris. This I will always cherish as a childhood memory.

I think I remember sitting on the back deck doing homework....and must have been plagued by a math problem. Auntie Chris (visiting from Calgary) taught me the single most important simple tool when it comes to counting: Just count by two..... and if memory serves me correct, she showed me how to count by two on her fingers. 2, 4, 6, 8... etc. I remember thinking this is the coolest thing ever. lol

I thought of this moment as I was counting marshmallows the other day. ;-)

December Is Here...Breathe.

It's everywhere so far......(cue Jingle bells) .... and its evident that your home will be covered in tinsel till the new year. If tinsel even exists anymore I have no clue... but I love tinsel. ... and not the expensive kind.... just the cheap 99 cent sorta stuff you dangle from the tree.

Christmas oranges fill the fruit section at the grocery stores and I'll be darn sure I won't get a moldy one this year. ;-)

I looked back at Christmas last year and all the warm fuzzy feelings came to my heart. The endless buffet of little finger foods, chocolate covered nuts and little presents waiting in the stockings. I love a good get together and that's probably my favorite part about the holidays. Bring out the table extenders!....there's nothing quite like a long decorated table with gravy remanent, half eaten turtle tarts and empty wine bottles. Seeing the kids expressions also makes me believe in the spirit of Christmas and makes me feel like a kid again.

December is here. Bring it.

....And don't forget, if you need any prints/enlargements/postcards for little gifts.... You have till Dec 10th to have in time for xmas. ;-) No pressure! lol

Homemade Heaven

Last year I made homemade salt scrubs for Christmas gifts. There is nothing I love more than a heartfelt homemade gift.

So I have some ideas brewing for this year... but I can't give out any secrets yet.

Here was the salt scrub lab last year... and I think Im still finding sea salt on the floor. ;-) Sadly I can't remember the recipe I followed... but when you google homemade salt scrubs, there are lots of options that come up to make your own creation.

I'm always so thankful to have help during a wedding. ...but my taurus nature, makes me a stubborn one to actually ask for the help. I prefer to try and get'r'done on my own and I'd like to think its possible to carry 17 heavy bags on my own. LOL ;-)

She's got my back. ;-) ...but I only wished she lived in Saskatoon!!!

Hello You, Its Me Again

I don't know what it is about coming back from a trip...but I feel like fixing the kitchen sink, making soups, stepping on a scale, buying presents and hitting the gym. (In no particular order)

Ohhhh Weight Watchers, I left you behind years ago, but turns out... I need you.

I'm not usually one to follow numbers, although!.....Thanks to my partner in crime, I do love the number 22 because its lucky, and the number 11 is awesome because X2 it equals 22. Oh and my favorite number is 7 because it looks like an upside down L..... But anyhow, the Weight Watchers scale read 164 today.
:-0 uuuugh. 1 6 4... that number kinda sucks for me. *Blush* That number haunted me 6 years ago when I stepped on a Weight Watchers scale and that number haunted me on today....which happens to be 22/11/11. But have no fear... those are good numbers. Trust me: Today wasss a good day, even though I had some numbers haunt me. :-)

In the past, I've lost weight, maintained, gained, lost, got in super shape, gained, maintained, lost, gained... repeat. Its a daily struggle for most women I know and yes its just easier to not pay attention to what goes in your mouth, cook with butter and to leave those runners on the shelf. Its been a blast eating whatever I wanted, drinking whatever I wanted and not really keeping super duper active.... because in my life, I really love to indulge. Those days aren't over... but they are on the shelf for a bit. So its a sad, yet uber exciting time right now. Is that possible? Okay, I'll drop the sad.

Ahhhh yes... the happy wedding couple (in the pool) will be married Friday. We're all pretty stoked.

There is something amazing about a small intimate wedding group. ... and I've totally enjoyed capturing candids all the way up to this point. :-)

Somewhere Between Paradise & Stunning

I'm a person that walks around on a daily basis and looks at everything like its in a frame. So in a way I look at things in a 4 X 6 manor...or 6 X 4. Which ever suites the scenery best. ;-)

I never realized how much I was looking forward to being somewhere I didn't know much about. I could get a little lump in my throat I'm so happy right now. ;-) In 3 days, I get to witness and document two people marrying each other in front of a small group of family and friends.

The scenery is at its best. :-)
